Trainer Talk: Teaching Recall

Puppy learning recall

Learning to come when called is such an essential behavior we introduce it early! This is one of the first things most puppies start to learn, even while they're still with their mom and litter mates. Playing recall games with a partner by taking turns calling the puppy by name and rewarding them upon arrival makes it fun for the puppy to come when called, which helps to build a reliable behavior. Walking outside off leash, in a safely fenced-in area, lets the puppies practice keeping an eye on their handler and being responsible for keeping up, even while exploring. Doing so builds a puppy's problem-solving skills and natural tendency to check in with their handler, precisely what we want to see!
