As a brilliant caseworker, avid reader, and crochet master, Melissa has always given her all to every challenge. She was born hard of hearing, and over time, her hearing loss progressed until she became completely Deaf. Throughout her life, Melissa has continually adapted to navigate a hearing world, with each new change bringing its own set of challenges. 

From ASL to lip reading, Melissa found resourceful ways to navigate her ever-changing world. For the past few years, she relied on her bilateral cochlear implants. Recently, however, wearing them for extended periods became increasingly difficult and uncomfortable, leaving her searching for another solution. Melissa reached out to Paragon Service Dogs, hoping to find a new way to connect with the world of sound. 

Meanwhile, an eager Lab named Fortune was beginning his training. Just like Melissa, he quickly proved he was always up for a challenge. His enthusiasm for work and talent as a demonstration dog at events showed Paragon’s trainers that he had the potential to be a wonderful match. 

And so, their story together began. 

Melissa shared that having Fortune has finally allowed her to feel at ease in ways she hadn't experienced before. For years, she woke up hours early, afraid she had missed her alarm. She constantly checked her phone to make sure she hadn't missed an alert and lived with the worry that she might miss an important opportunity to participate in the world around her. 

With Fortune by her side, that persistent worry is beginning to fade. Knowing he will alert her when it's time to wake up, when it's time to leave, or when someone is at the door brings a newfound sense of peace. The endless checking of the clock, the door, and the phone can finally give way to being present in the moment, all thanks to Fortune.
