Courtney’s hearing loss began in seventh grade and steadily progressed, quietly reshaping her world. What once felt like an exciting place to explore slowly became overwhelming—filled with the dread of missing sounds, cues, and connection. Through it all, one constant lifted her spirits: her deep love for dogs. After the passing of her last dog, the loneliness felt heavier than ever, and Courtney reached out to Paragon Service Dogs in hopes of finding not just a companion, but a partner who could help her reclaim her sense of freedom.

Caro, a bright and energetic yellow Labrador, came to Paragon after being raised by the skilled inmate handlers at Wyoming Medium Correctional Institute (WMCI). There, he mastered essential commands and began building the steady, reliable foundation needed to become a remarkable hearing dog.

When Caro and Courtney were matched, something clicked immediately. His spirited energy and eager heart opened doors that had once felt closed. With Caro by her side, Courtney rediscovered excitement, adventure, and a renewed sense of possibility.

Courtney shared the deep impact Caro has made on her life, “He’s my best friend. I can’t believe how much we’ve already bonded. He’s by my side constantly, and I can’t imagine life without him. He has brought me so much joy. I knew I was in a dark place deepened by loneliness, but I could never have imagined the amount of smiles and laughter he would bring me, and in such a short time.

He has brought me such confidence and happiness—now I’m excited to leave the house with him looking out for me when before it was something I would dread. And to see how proud he is to come trotting to alert me when our sounds go off makes me so proud of him.” Courtney shares, "A huge weight and vulnerability has been lifted from me. I feel more at peace than I have in so long."
